Tips for business leaders to help get it right

The Future of Hiring is Skills-Based

Hey there, it's Matt!

Thanks for joining me for this edition of the Culture Crumbs newsletter. This week we’re taking a look at skills-based hiring. I’ve seen teams apply this in various industries and figured I’d share some key insights on how to modernize your hiring practices to find the best talent in today's competitive market.

Let’s take a look…

With talent competition fierce, business leaders can no longer rely on traditional hiring practices focused on resumes and pedigree. Leading organizations are shifting to skills-based hiring - prioritizing candidates' actual abilities over credentials.

Implementing skills-based hiring enables you to build agile teams ready to adapt in a rapidly changing business landscape.

Here are tips to make it work:

  • Carefully define the core technical and soft skills required for each role based on the specific needs of your organization. Go deep on which behaviors drive performance.

  • Develop customized skills assessments to objectively evaluate candidates. Align technical tests to your tech stack. Assess soft skills through written/verbal exercises, case studies and presentations.

  • Take a flexible approach to candidate sourcing. Look beyond conventional backgrounds for demonstrated skills. Consider bootcamp grads, online learners, freelancers.

  • Mitigate bias through blind resume review, skills-based interviews, diverse sourcing and unconscious bias training. Thoughtful design is key.

  • Support teams, after the fact, with continuous performance management and development opportunities. Skills-based hiring is just the start.

Skills-based hiring is just the beginning. To build a strong, resilient workforce, you need to continually develop your team's skills over time. That's where ongoing performance management comes in.

Taking the time on the frontend can ensure that a particular employee is a fit and stays on for the long haul - not only benefitting your team but also saving you a ton of money in not having to find and train new team members as often.

Ultimately, with the right skills mix, you can build an agile, resilient workforce ready to take on new challenges and drive your organization’s success.
